photosynthetic fleece

Synthetic photosynthesising fleece (fragment)

This is an early example of a man-made photosynthetic ‘fleece’, a genetic modification introduced to sheep and other grazing stock to enable them to generate their own food directly from the energy of the sun’s rays. Animals modified in this way were thus able to graze on tarmac, rooftops and other man-made surfaces, enabling the re-wilding of grasslands or, more often, their conversion to golf-courses.
