Mouth seal or ‘pacifier’

Social silence (that is, the tendency not to speak out on existential issues, such as fossil fuel consumption and climate change, for fear of becoming socially isolated) became endemic in the latter years of the Oil Age. More talkative individuals resorted to use of aids such as this pacifier to curb their natural desire to speak out.
