This fragment dates from an era when ‘monetary’ systems were the norm almost universally, and physical money (or plastic substitutes known as ‘cards’ or just ‘plastic’) was the primary means of exchange. Bank collapse, crippling debt and hyper-inflation led to the development of our existing time- and barter-based exchange systems.
