COLLECTIONS: BELIEFS

superhuman

Superhuman or divine figure

This enigmatic male figure was found on the beach at Covehithe, Suffolk. Some experts believe he may represent an aerial divinity capable of submarine journeying, and bearing a trophy from some heroic exploit. Whilst Jason captured the Golden Fleece, this hitherto nameless god seems to have captured a piece of equipment which promises to add to his powers and render him even more formidable than before.
Other experts suggest this figure may be a messenger bringing humankind a technological solution for global warming: the pipe he holds aloft being seen as the template for a kind of sun-driven, sky-hook megapump to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. If so, his message is a timely one, as global CO2 concentrations have recently exceeded 400 parts per million.
