ABOUT FRAN

I live near the Suffolk coast, England, on four acres of semi-wild land where I attempt (not very well!) to grow a lot of our own food and to create a haven for wildlife - the two things don't always go well together!

As you will see, I love to collect - especially the discarded and unvalued - and I use these materials in my art. Most of the items in the museum are from my own collections (I have collected more than 100,000 pieces of plastic whilst walking on local beaches; even my dog gets fed up with me when I'm in 'collecting mode'!).

Whilst my work is seriously researched, I love to use humour in my work (I describe it as 'playful but deadly serious') and my exhibitions are often visually enticing. Although initial impressions are often stunning, the sting is in the detail... my work shocks while it entertains, at the same time hopefully imparting an unforgettable message.

I really believe that everyone can make a difference and I hope the museum, exhibitions and website will inspire others also to create for change, both through personal example (in one of my madder moments I ‘saved’ one square mile of sea by collecting 46000 pieces of plastic marine debris whilst walking on local beaches!) and through events and projects.

You can see more of my projects (including my attempt to save a square mile of sea) on my website www.flyintheface.com. And you can hear me in interview with Talking Walking here.

I love hearing from people who have seen my work or visited my website, and to hear about what you are doing too - so please do get in touch if you feel like or if you would like to receive very occasional updates about what I'm up to.

Good luck!
